Success!! The meer sound of these 7 letter word evoke some sense joy, ego sense of belonging to the where ever it is mentioned. But success itself is relative.
Success means different things to different people but here is the though to ponder on what does success means to you?. Exciting right! Follow me through as a take u through a drill unvieling what success truely is.
There exist no single definition of success because success is personal but here is my take on it based on a lay man’s view point . Success is simply achieving a set goal or goals. The goals here varry from persons to persons and wether they are long or short term goals.
But I think success is living and fulfilling your purpose on Earth while living a legacy for the next generation.
Before beginning I will like to call your attention to some key issues and cardinalities that needs to be carefully studied before talking about success and how succes is perceived.
People differ and so is their opinion, character, purpose: in this light we try to examine the different natures, character, jobs, purpose of individuals.
People differ in all these aspects and so does their view and take on success. Some people consider success based on assets and wealth, some equate success based on the number of life you have affected, some based on business expansion, some based on having a happy family.
All the above-listed characteristics are successes at different levels and domains and so vary with individuals based on which they give more preference too.
2. Societies/environment differ so is their living standards. Before considering success let’s examine our different environmental settings. Talking on an African context especially in a rural community, having a large family, many wives, and children with large farmlands is a sign of success for them.
This believe is held very strongly in their environmental settings it’s how they rate success. Going to the urban areas succes here means having fleets of cars,,houses, well educated and have connections and power such a person is considered very successful or a first class citizen based on his environmental settings.
Going by European standards it’s a different scenario for example 10million FRS, CFA is enough money to establish a company here in Africa but that’s just flight expenses for an average European and his family explains clear the societal gap and hence the societal rating of success.
There exist no equilibrium/ standards to lay claim of success because success itself is diverse and vary per time imagine growing up as a student all I ever wanted was to get good grades and advance to the next level of my education that was a success for me then but as time goes on I began incorporating new goals and vision like getting a good job or establishing a successful business and having a family until all these goals are achieved at a slated time frame I won’t be considered as successful.
Similarly, a businessman at the start of his business just wish to establish a business, make money, buy a house, get married but along the line as the business expands new goals sets in maybe to leverage all the markets and make his production number 1 in his country, town or even international borders without which he won’t consider it as a success.
Looking back at the various definition given by different CEO tells u alot about the differences in defining success. Based on studies and even from biblical principles true success should and must be the centered and judged from moral and ethical considerations.
Meaning true succes is based on the number of affected lives impacted positively and the legacy left behind or what you will be remembered for after u are long gone. Therefore we should center our successes by identifying visible changes within and without our communities, family, nations and the world at large not just on material possessions alone. Let divert a bit into history and look at some Noble change makers.
Going to the world since we have people like Albert Einstein, Micheal Faraday who did important discoveries and inventions that are of service today in our present world. What about Nelson Mandela, who fought against the appetite reign giving South Africa the freedom they enjoy today. What about mother Theresia who worked for the poor in Indian for free-living a legacy that is still been echoed and applauded in our world still dating.
Success as relative as it may be still has some nuggets on which judgment can be based which is the number of lives transformed through you. Hence in all you do be it business, acedemic, politics, social or entertainment let moral and ethical values be your guide. Always strive to leave a legacy which will be used to remember you when u are long gone. I conclude with this true success is making a meaningful living through the fulfilment of your purpose and leaving a legacy for which you will be remembered for even after a decades or generations to come.
