The 5th of June marked the celebration of the world environment day with biodiversity lost as the key theme of discussion.
Human for centuries now has been committing untold atrocities against mother nature which has been its source of existence for several decades now.
The Industrial Revolution
Since the industrial revolution, there has been an ever-increasing degradation with regards to nature from Flora to fauna.
A world handed to us by our ancestors who with little technology and income manage to conserve nature to it’s the purest form and handed the same to us but the question is ” will our generations to come to see, enjoy and be able to boast about the beauty nature has to offer”?
The answer remains uncertain. Because our generation has so many unanswered questions which getting their answers to is a pointer to the former question.
Advancement in Technology
In recent times there has been an advancement in technology, income, and global connectivity yet an increasing degradation in nature globally, the questions we all ask what is when wrong?
Man has been a rational been seeks to live a life of excess even at the detriment of others this same irrational behavior though thought as been rational has been exercised on nature for decades now with several tolls of atrocities from deforestation, pollution in all its forms, forest conversion, poaching, haphazard logging, etc thinking nature and its resources are limitless.
Ignoring the lessons from the” tragedy of the commons theory” nature on the other hand is now concurring to this theory by proving it has a threshold beyond which she can no longer sustain man’s atrocities.
Evidence of this are species extinction, glaciers melt, rise in sea levels, floodings, increase in the earths temperature, increase in the frequency of natural disasters and extreme weather events, wildlife etc.
A typical example is the recent Australian wildlife that killed tons of thousands of animal and Flora species. The man seems to be turning a blind eye as the situation worsens.
The general summary of all the above challenges man is facing now is climate change which is the trigger point of the major challenges within our planet today there is need for a fast and sustainable technological and behavioral adjustment relying on technological adjustment alone without man developing an affinity towards the environment we all will just be turning around on the same spots while the problem increases.
Many attempt and claim to conserve biodiversity and nature has failed as the rate of species lost is increasing exponentially despise the rise in conservation organization and increase in research grants and seeds for nature protection.
In line with the recent debates and arguments put forward by economists says nature was meant for men to use and should man not develop because he wants to conserve nature?. To answer this question.
I will focus my attention on the Subsaharan Africa region using Cameroon as my focal Development is essential and a critical stage in the life of every nation and this development is spurred from the equitable use resources from flora to fauna.
Cameroon is one of the countries within the African continent blessed with rich biodiversity from Flora to fauna it richness has attracted several tourists both far and near and has earned her the name “Africa miniature” This rich biodiversity is now on a declining stage as economic gains have been the center of focus.
There has been a rise in conservation areas and wildlife parks but an exponential increase in biodiversity loss reason behind exponential loss is simple economic gain. National parks and wildlife reserves are created without adequate planning and research.
Most species rich areas are inhabited by local indedigenous people who are usually less than 500 who are indegins and depends on those forest for their livelihoods.
Forcefully instituting this area as a reserve simple to attract economic gains without planning for resettlement and providing alternatives sources of livelihoods for this indigenous people will make the conservation efforts fruitless and cause thrive.
Northern Part of Cameroun
This person will never respect such decree as the case of the Sudan Sahelian region in the northern part of Cameroon which was converted to a national park with any resettlement plan for the indigenes and offering them another form of livelihoods.
Another example is the unhealthy logging and fishing practices wherein young wood and fish species which are to be left to mature and also reproduce are harvested just for economic gains forgetting there is a future to cling on too.
As opposed to the economist viewpoint is adhere to the idea of sustainable development which talks of the equitable use of resources without adverse impact on the future generations. In other words, development should be evaluated on a long-term bases.
We can’t continue to turn a blind eye to the call of nature there already existing repacautions experienced is enough sign for a wake up call. It’s time to involve all stakeholders and to engage in sustainable development planning and pratices, let develope, invent and grow wisely not at the detriment of nature.
We owe a Civic responsibility for our future generations to see and enjoy all the services nature has to offer and why not even to a greater degree. Remember God never created anything useless, if we should look at the ecological balance of nature we will understand everything on earth has a role in balancing the ecosystem hence we should not be selfish but more tolerant and live in harmony with nature.
